Exhibit: Sakura Orihon, Diary of a Cherry Blossom Journey

March 1st 2025 - March 20th 2025

Exhibits Gallery, National Bonsai & Penjing Museum

Open daily 10 am – 4 pm

As he followed the blossoming cherry trees from south to north throughout Japan, American landscape architect Ron Henderson recorded his experience in folding sketchbooks called orihon. His journals celebrate the cherry blossom culture in Japan, highlighting Henderson’s pilgrimages to visit famous old trees. He also focuses on the horticultural practices that extend the lives of cherry trees in Japan, illustrating pruning techniques, branch crutches, rope tenting, and root grafting. This exhibition of Henderson’s books inspires awe for these trees as well as appreciation for the unique manner in which one man documented an extraordinary journey.
