Springhouse Run Renovation Internship 2021
The Springhouse Run intern will assist the staff of the U.S. National Arboretum in managing the fourth year following construction and planting of an innovative stream restoration project that was built in cooperation with the District of Columbia on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum.
Description
The Springhouse Run Renovation intern’s work will be coordinated with the staff of the Fern Valley Native Plant Collection. The internship is 3 months long and is anticipated to begin in May 2021. Weekend work will be required occasionally. The internship is paid through a stipend. College credit may be arranged by the student and is encouraged.
Qualifications
Applicants need to have either completed course work or have acquired practical experience in horticulture, ecological restoration, or a related field. Basic gardening skills, interest in plants, and the ability to work independently are essential. Although not required, the ability to organize and lead volunteers is strongly encouraged.
Duties & Working Conditions
The intern will assist with planting and weed control in the vicinity of the restoration, assist with planning and conducting volunteer opportunities at the site, and will also assist with maintaining the plants being grown for the restoration. The intern will work with volunteers at planting and invasive plant control events, manage tools to be used by volunteers, and answer questions from the visiting public about the project. The internship will involve heavy lifting, repetitive tasks, and exposure to extreme weather conditions, as well as include work in an office setting.
