Answer to the Front Page "Picture of the Week" Question for August 21st - August 28th, 2003
This is the flower of pomegranate, Punica granatum.
Pomegranate is hardy as far north as Washington, DC, but seldom ripens its fruit here.
You can see pomegranates in full flower in the National Herb Garden.
